Brazil's Amazon deforestation fell 42% to 3,335 square kilometres between August 2025 and July 2026, the lowest level since monitoring began in 1988, India Global Review reported, citing government data released on October 16. Forest clearing in the Cerrado declined 24% to 5,516 square kilometres, its lowest level since 2001.
The decline came as fires continued to burn. The outlet described aerial footage from Amazonas state showing forest ablaze and firefighting teams trying to contain the flames.
Officials said illegal burning to clear land for agriculture remained a threat to the rainforest. Indigenous communities reported losses of forests, wildlife and livelihoods.
