Several people were killed or injured in a major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday, 17 October, the Canadian Armed Forces said. According to BBC News, the blaze began at about 16:00 local time (22:00 GMT), and authorities were still assessing the scale of the casualties on Sunday.

The military said it would not release casualty and injury details until that assessment was complete. Defence Minister David McGuinty said military personnel and local authorities were handling the emergency, stressing that the situation remained active and sensitive.

Cause and death toll remain unconfirmed

Global News, citing unnamed military sources, reported that at least seven people had died and dozens were injured after a gas line or gas well was struck during a live-fire training exercise. Neither that casualty count nor the reported cause had been confirmed by officials.

A defence department spokeswoman said on Sunday morning that investigations were continuing and there was, at that stage, no indication of terrorist activity.

Wainwright is among Canada's busiest military training installations. CBC described it as the military's principal base for live-fire exercises, with roughly 690 military personnel and 300 civilian employees present on a typical day. Those figures are routine staffing levels, not a count of people involved in the incident.

High winds spread blaze as hospitals respond

The Municipal District of Wainwright said strong winds drove the fire rapidly through the base's fences. Gusts in the region reached up to 100km/h, although local officials subsequently indicated that crews had contained the blaze.

Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton activated a code orange, a protocol for responding to a disaster involving large numbers of casualties, CBC reported. Emergency department doctor Warren Thirsk told the broadcaster that the patient numbers could otherwise overwhelm Edmonton's healthcare facilities.

Residents were asked to stay away from the affected area and ensure emergency vehicles could pass without obstruction.

Neighbouring provinces offer help

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said resources had been sent to Alberta and further support could follow. British Columbia Premier David Eby said his government had offered assistance.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed concern for those affected, while General Jennie Carignan, Canada's chief of defence staff, described the incident as a deeply difficult moment for the armed forces.

Wainwright Mayor Bruce Pugh highlighted the close ties between the town and the military community, whose families share schools and sports teams. He told CBC he believed the incident could become the area's largest mass-casualty event, though its full impact remained unclear.
