Columbus Marathon 2026 puts children’s healthcare at its heart

The Columbus Marathon’s sold-out 2026 event registered more than 15,000 runners and walkers. Its patient champions highlight a hospital partnership that had raised more than $15 million since 2012, including over $1.4 million in 2025.

The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon and Half Marathon registered more than 15,000 runners and walkers for its sold-out October 18 event in Columbus, Ohio, The Economic Times reported. The 2026 edition centres on a hospital partnership that had raised more than $15 million since 2012—not a fundraising total for this year’s race alone.

Children who have received treatment at the hospital are central to the event’s identity. Across the 26.2-mile marathon route, 24 miles are associated with individual patients, while two other mile sections recognise former patient champions and remember children who have died.

The patients behind the miles

The “Marathon Mile Champions” programme connects the race with children cared for at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The event website, cited in the report, describes patients and families cheering from the course, giving participants a direct connection to the people the fundraising is intended to support.

The “Encore Mile” recognises patient champions from earlier editions. The “Remembrance Mile” offers families a place to honour children who have died and celebrate their lives. Together, these sections make recognition and remembrance part of the race rather than separate activities.

A cumulative fundraising record

The marathon raised more than $1.4 million for the hospital in 2025, taking the cumulative amount since 2012 beyond $15 million. The money supports the hospital’s care for children and families. No 2026 fundraising total was reported.

That longstanding connection explains the description of Columbus as “America’s most meaningful race”. It is a characterisation of the event’s charitable purpose, rather than an established ranking against other races.

A milestone race weekend

The October 16–18 programme marked the marathon’s 46th edition and the half marathon’s 20th. It also marked the fifth edition of the Jesse Owens 5K and 1 Mile races.

The report listed partial and full road closures beginning around the start on Long Street and extending along the marathon and 13.1-mile half-marathon routes. Closure timing was to depend on the anticipated arrival of the first and last athletes.

The October 18 report alternated between preview language and describing the race as having taken place. It supplied no finishing results; the participation figure refers to registrations, not confirmed finishers.
