India’s box-office collections increased 17% year on year to ₹11,000 crore in January–September 2026, from ₹9,409 crore a year earlier, The Economic Times reported on October 20, citing media and entertainment research firm Ormax Media. The gains have come alongside stronger theatre attendance and success for films across budgets and languages.
Cinema footfalls rose 5% to 378 million in January–June, according to the reported Ormax figures, after three years in which attendance had declined or remained broadly unchanged. The attendance and collection figures cover different periods: six months for footfalls and nine months for revenue. They therefore do not establish how much of the revenue increase came from attendance rather than ticket prices.
Smaller films share in the recovery
Producer Anand Pandit said the year’s performance should also be assessed through the returns films generated relative to their budgets. He attributed part of their appeal to audiences’ growing acceptance of stories that feel authentic.
One example cited in the report was the Malayalam film Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, which collected ₹192 crore in India against a reported production budget of ₹25 crore. Those figures illustrate its box-office scale, but gross collections are not the same as the producer’s receipts or net profit.
The report also identified successes spanning small-budget devotional film Hanuman Ansh, mid-budget romance Awarapan 2, action film DC, devotional title Irumudi and small-budget family drama Premada Oorali. At the larger end of the market, it cited the franchise film Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge. Comparable collection and budget figures were not given for those titles.
Local audiences and distinctive stories
Producer Sunir Khetrpal said cinema audiences were seeking fresh experiences rather than familiar formulas, with language, genre and star status gradually becoming less decisive in their choices.
Regional filmmakers are increasingly concentrating first on their home markets, the report said. Films that connect with those audiences can then reach other territories through recommendations and social-media discussion.
Producer and film business expert Girish Johar identified an emotional connection with the story as a recurring feature of theatrical successes across languages this year. These observations offer industry explanations for the broader spread of successful films, rather than a measured breakdown of what drove the increase in collections.
Hollywood adds to the momentum
The report cited Obsession, Michael and The Odyssey as examples of Hollywood films finding audiences in India across different scales and genres. Distributor and film business expert Shaaminder Malik said Instagram, YouTube, short-form videos and Reddit discussions were increasingly helping build those audiences.
Trade analysts expect Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, alongside Hindi releases The Ramayana and King, to support collections during the remainder of 2026. They also expect Hollywood’s share of India’s box office to reach 20–21%, compared with a historical average of 15%. These are forecasts, not completed full-year results.
