Firefighters and residents fought wildfires near residential areas in Indonesia’s Central Kalimantan province on October 21, India Global Review reported. Flames moved through dry vegetation, prompting locals to stay on watch overnight out of concern that their homes could be reached.
Firefighters said months without substantial rainfall had depleted available water, complicating efforts to contain the fires. The report cited satellite data showing Indonesia’s cumulative burned area increasing from 895,650 hectares in August to 1.92 million hectares by the end of September.
Thick haze from the fires also spread into neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore, according to the report.
