Italy Protests: Northern Riots, Southern Traffic Blockades

Italy faced unrest in both its north and south, with youth demonstrations in northern cities ending in riots and farmers and truckers in the south stopping commercial traffic, The New York Times reported on October 19.

The report attributed the southern action to anger over high gas prices. It did not identify a cause for the northern demonstrations in its summary or establish a connection between the two sets of protests.
