Gurinder Gill, 28, has been charged with murdering his wife, Jasmine Gill, an India-born nurse whose burned and buried remains were found in California’s El Dorado County on October 1, India Today reported. Investigators said his claim that US immigration agents had detained her outside their Sacramento home was contradicted by the agency.
Jasmine, 30, was the mother of an eight-month-old boy. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the couple were in the midst of divorce proceedings and a child custody dispute when she disappeared.
Her cousin reported her missing on October 4, four days after she was last seen. Authorities had discovered the remains three days before that missing-person report, roughly 70 miles from the couple’s home. They were subsequently identified as Jasmine’s.
Investigators challenged the detention account
During the search for Jasmine, Gurinder told police that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had taken her away while she was collecting mail outside their home. Detectives contacted ICE, which told them there had been no enforcement activity at the residence.
Sheriff’s office spokesperson Sergeant Edward Igoe said detectives also found several inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements about his wife’s disappearance. Deputies arrested him on October 14 and executed search warrants at two homes associated with him. He is being held without bail. The murder charge is an accusation, not a finding of guilt.
Family seeks to return her remains to India
A GoFundMe campaign supporting the family said Jasmine was born in India, where her mother still lives, and became a registered nurse following her mother’s example. The campaign described her as seeking a new beginning for herself and her child through divorce.
The fundraiser had collected more than $21,000 to help return Jasmine’s remains to her mother and provide support for her infant son.
