Reliance Industries’ Jio Platforms drew enough bids to cover its ₹30,213 crore public offering within 100 minutes of opening on Wednesday, October 21, Economic Times Markets reported, citing BSE website data. The report described the offering as India’s largest IPO and said its subscription speed and anchor-investor demand had also set records. Applications remain open until October 23.

The reported issue size exceeds Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,870 crore offering in 2024. Jio’s price band is ₹1,065–₹1,119 a share, with the upper end implying a company valuation of approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore.

Fresh capital, primarily for debt repayment

The offer consists of 27 crore newly issued shares, with no offer-for-sale component. Jio plans to direct ₹27,500 crore towards repaying or prepaying borrowings and use the remaining proceeds for general corporate purposes. These are planned uses of the funds, not completed debt repayments.

Existing investors—including Meta, Google, the Public Investment Fund, KKR, Vista Equity Partners and Silver Lake—are not selling shares through this offering. The distinction matters: the issue raises capital for the company rather than providing sale proceeds to those shareholders.

Institutions drove the early subscription

The portion reserved for qualified institutional buyers was covered within the first 10 minutes and approached twice its allotted shares in less than half an hour, according to the reported figures.

At an intermediate snapshot, institutional subscription had reached 2.86 times while the overall offer stood at 0.83 times. The full issue was subsequently covered within 100 minutes. These figures describe different points during the opening session, rather than the final subscription position at the close of the offer.

₹2.5 lakh crore in bids for the anchor allocation

Before public bidding began, the ₹8,110 crore anchor portion attracted approximately ₹2.5 lakh crore in bids—more than 30 times the shares available. The report characterised this as the highest anchor demand recorded for an Indian IPO. That bid value represents demand, not the amount raised through the anchor allocation.

Shares were allotted to 212 investor accounts and schemes at ₹1,119 each. Participants included LIC, BlackRock, Fidelity, Singapore’s GIC, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, BNP Paribas, Allianz and JPMorgan, alongside Indian mutual funds.

Domestic mutual funds received 2.49 crore shares across 95 schemes, worth approximately ₹2,785 crore and accounting for 34.34% of the anchor book. Another 22 insurance-company and pension-fund accounts received shares worth about ₹1,090 crore. LIC’s allocation was 44.68 lakh shares, valued at nearly ₹500 crore, or 6.17% of the anchor portion.

The business pitch extends beyond connectivity

Alongside the subscription response, the report highlighted an operating question for investors: whether Jio can turn its customer base into higher-margin earnings from digital services, enterprise technology and artificial intelligence as subscriber additions become a less powerful growth driver.

Managing Director Akash Ambani presented connectivity as the foundation for a wider technology business, with digital services, AI and cloud offerings being built on top. The reported IPO demand shows interest in that proposition; it does not establish future earnings or a listing-day return.
