Katie Zacharia was dismissed as White House press secretary on Friday after just five days in the role, India Today reported, citing The Wall Street Journal. She had been discussing her plans for the press office with the Journal when senior adviser Jason Miller interrupted to say US Vice President JD Vance wanted to speak with her.

The account places the interruption shortly before 1 pm at Zacharia’s West Wing desk. Miller said, “JD wanted to chat with us real quick.” Zacharia left and did not resume the interview. The report does not establish who subsequently delivered the dismissal decision.

At around the same time, President Donald Trump was telling reporters, as he departed for Georgia, that he had earlier urged Zacharia to think again about the position. He recounted asking: “Is this for you, Katie? Because honestly, you don't need this.”

First briefing drew scrutiny

The dismissal followed a difficult debut at the White House briefing-room podium on Tuesday. According to the report, Zacharia spoke for roughly 14 minutes, relied extensively on prepared notes and took only three questions, all from outlets described as friendly to the administration.

Speaking to the Journal after her dismissal, Zacharia said she had received less than 24 hours to prepare for that briefing, with background material arriving only on the morning it took place. She attributed her reliance on notes to those constraints, while saying she did not blame the White House for scheduling her appearance so quickly.

Zacharia said she had worked to deliver the briefing with the time and information available. “My goal was to serve President Trump and the American people to the best of my ability,” she told the Journal.

Plans for the office remained unfinished

During the interview interrupted on Friday, Zacharia had appeared to be planning ahead. She told the Journal she intended to retain the existing press-office staff and wanted the team to remain cohesive.

Her short tenure also brought questions about her legal credentials. On Fox News’ Hannity, host Sean Hannity asked her about claims that she had not passed the bar examination, despite Trump having described her as an attorney. The report does not resolve that allegation or give her response to the question.

Zacharia, described in the report as a 41-year-old California mother of four, also told the Journal she had been getting little sleep. She had celebrated her son’s birthday late on Thursday before appearing on Fox & Friends the next morning.
