At least 19 people were killed and 25 injured in a stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Maha Saptami, according to India Global Review. Police have arrested seven people, including puja organisers, and registered a culpable homicide case.
A special investigation team is examining possible crowd-management lapses and confusion over entry and exit routes. Investigators are also looking into whether announcements or security whistles triggered the rush; these remain possible causes under investigation, not established findings.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the West Bengal Chief Minister visited the injured, the outlet reported. The arrests do not establish criminal responsibility.
