Kuala Lumpur was covered in haze on October 22 as smoke from forest fires in neighbouring Indonesia drifted across Malaysia, India Global Review reported. Swiss air-quality monitor IQAir recorded an Air Quality Index of 171, in the unhealthy category, at 0300 GMT.
Satellite data from Nusantara Atlas cited in the report put Indonesia’s cumulative burned area at 1.92 million hectares by the end of September, up from 895,650 hectares in August.
The report said haze had also travelled towards Singapore and East Timor, raising concerns about air quality and public health beyond Malaysia.
