Pope Leo XIV to leave hospital after lung cancer surgery

Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to leave Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Saturday afternoon, 17 October, four days after surgeons removed a cancerous growth from his lung, BBC News reported. The Vatican said he would lead the traditional Angelus prayer and blessing for worshippers in St Peter’s Square on Sunday.

Tuesday’s 90-minute operation involved removing the lower lobe of his right lung. His doctors said subsequent blood tests and a chest X-ray indicated continued improvement, but results of further tests examining whether the cancer has spread have not been announced.

The planned Sunday appearance comes despite the Pope’s diary having been cleared until 20 October. He had announced the impending surgery during the previous Sunday’s Angelus.

Recovery and travel plans

Photographs released on Friday showed the Pope celebrating Mass and giving communion to hospital staff.

People close to him said he wanted to avoid postponing a Latin American trip planned for early November. The itinerary includes Peru, where he spent many years as a missionary. Whether he will be well enough to travel, or will need additional treatment, remains uncertain.

Ukraine appeal during hospital stay

The Pope also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, their first telephone conversation since June 2025. The Vatican described the purpose as encouraging peace through dialogue.

He sought a humanitarian ceasefire in Russian-occupied Oleshkiy in Ukraine so residents could be evacuated and urgently needed food and medicine delivered. The appeal came amid intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and mounting civilian casualties.
