Indian equities enter Thursday, October 22, after sharp closing-auction swings capped a Wednesday selloff that erased more than Rs 8 lakh crore from the market value of BSE-listed companies. Economic Times Markets reported that Sensex finished at 73,710 and Nifty at 22,811—above their levels immediately before the auction, despite a session marked by elevated crude prices, foreign investor selling and widespread declines.
The auction recovery did not signal a broad improvement in sentiment. On the NSE, 2,988 stocks fell against just 608 advances, while 102 were unchanged.
Closing auction produces sharp reversals
Sensex stood at 73,509 as the closing auction session, or CAS, began and normal trading ended for stocks in the futures-and-options segment. Its indicative level then climbed towards 73,872, briefly turning positive for the day, before retreating to a loss-making close at 73,710.
Nifty's indicative movement was larger. From around 22,738 before the auction, it jumped more than 500 points, or over 2%, towards 23,240. Most of that surge subsequently faded, leaving the index at 22,811.
The distinction matters: both benchmarks finished above their pre-auction readings, but those comparisons describe the closing-session rebound, not gains of the same size over the previous day's close.
Crude, foreign flows and earnings shape Thursday's watchlist
Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, attributed the reversal of strong early gains to high crude prices and continued foreign institutional investor selling, which outweighed optimism over India-US trade negotiations.
He said profit-taking spread across automobile, financial, metals and real-estate stocks as investors weighed inflation risks and pressure on company margins. Information technology shares were relatively resilient, supported by improving earnings visibility and renewed investor interest.
Nair identified resilient second-quarter earnings and strong domestic institutional flows as supports for the market. However, weak breadth and persistent foreign selling warranted caution. In his assessment, the next move would depend on how widely earnings strength extends across companies, progress in trade talks and foreign investment flows.
He also pointed to sustained easing in crude prices, global bond yields and currency volatility as important conditions for greater market stability.
Trading activity highlights a divided market
L&T Tech led the listed high-turnover NSE counters with Rs 3,273 crore, followed by ICICI Bank at Rs 2,446 crore and Infosys at Rs 2,162 crore. Reliance Industries recorded Rs 2,142 crore, HDFC Bank Rs 1,878 crore, Bajaj Finance Rs 1,729 crore and Bharti Airtel Rs 1,691 crore.
By share volume, Vodafone Idea recorded 52.58 crore shares traded and Yes Bank 20.72 crore. JP Power and Suzlon Energy followed with 8.26 crore and 6.26 crore shares, respectively. Turnover and volume measure trading activity rather than, by themselves, the direction of investor conviction.
Stocks identified as attracting buying interest included India Cements, L&T Tech, Fractal Analytics, Ipca Labs, Hexaware Technologies, Wipro and Piramal Finance. Selling pressure was reported in Himadri Speciality, Jindal Saw, Ramkrishna Forgings, Gallantt Metal, CreditAccess Grameen, JP Power and TD Power System.
HFCL was among the stocks reaching a 52-week high. SRF, Cochin Shipyard, Vishal Mega Mart, NTPC Green Energy and HEG were among those touching 52-week lows, underscoring the uneven performance beneath the benchmark indices.
