Indian shares extended their losses on Friday, October 23, as rising crude prices weighed on the market. The Sensex fell more than 400 points to 72,844, while the Nifty 50 lost more than 200 points to trade below 22,500 at around 10.20 am, according to Economic Times Markets. Small- and mid-cap indices suffered steeper declines, falling up to 3%. These figures are a reported intraday snapshot, not closing prices or a live market feed.
The reversal erased an early Sensex gain of roughly 500 points. IT shares had helped the index open higher despite a sell-off in global artificial intelligence-linked stocks. Nifty IT remained an exception to the wider weakness, rising 1%.
Selling spreads beyond the benchmarks
Nifty Metal and Nifty Consumer Durables fell around 3% each. Nifty Auto, Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Realty were among the sector indices down roughly 2%. On the NSE, 2,778 stocks declined against 407 advances, while 102 were unchanged—showing that the weakness extended well beyond a few heavyweight shares.
Analysts outline a conditional recovery
V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, identified Brent crude at $114 as a significant headwind for India's economy and equities. He nevertheless argued that a decline in the US 10-year yield to 4.96% and rupee appreciation to 94.70 against the dollar could help curb foreign institutional investor selling. He also expected money released after IPO allotments, due to be completed by Monday, to support market liquidity next week.
That was a recovery scenario, not an assured outcome. Vijayakumar expected any rally to be led by large-cap stocks, which he viewed as relatively resilient. He warned that small-cap losses could persist because liquidity-driven valuations were difficult to justify, and favoured reasonably valued large companies with sound growth prospects for patient investors.
On the technical outlook, Hemang Gor, senior research analyst for derivatives and technical research at Axis Direct, identified 22,500 as an important Nifty support level. He said sustaining a move through resistance at 22,800 could trigger short-covering towards 23,000. The reported snapshot already placed the index below his support level, so that upside scenario depended on a recovery rather than describing the market's prevailing position.
