Market Concepts, Explained

Short explainers to help every reader follow the numbers above.

What moves gold prices?

Gold rises when real interest rates fall, the dollar weakens, or investors seek safety. Indian prices track the international rate plus the rupee's value and import duty.

Reading a stock index

The NIFTY 50 and SENSEX bundle India's largest companies into one number. When the index rises, the average big stock is gaining — a quick pulse of the whole market.

Why bond yields matter

When government bond yields rise, borrowing gets costlier across the economy. Equity investors watch yields closely — higher yields can pressure stock valuations.

Crude oil and India

India imports most of its oil. Every dollar rise in crude widens the import bill, pressures the rupee and can feed inflation — which is why oil leads market headlines.

How IPOs work

A company lists its shares on the exchange for the first time. After listing, the price floats freely — tracking recent listings shows how new entrants are received.

Rupee exchange rates

A weaker rupee makes imports dearer but helps exporters and IT services. The RBI watches the rate and can step in to smooth sharp moves.
