Anthropic pledges 5% of shares to public benefit fund

Anthropic plans to allocate 5% of its shares to a fund supporting public-good initiatives, with a further 2% possible at its board’s discretion. The pledge comes ahead of a potential stock market listing, amid scrutiny of AI safety and employment effects.

Anthropic says it will allocate 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund that could support nonprofit organisations and initiatives addressing artificial intelligence’s effects on employment. BBC News reported that the Claude developer announced the proposal on Sunday, October 18, as it prepares for a potential stock market listing that could value the company at more than $1 trillion.

The company said its board could authorise a further allocation of 2% of its shares to the fund. It also ruled out using the fund’s shareholding for lobbying or political donations, either in the United States or abroad.

Equity pledge ahead of a potential listing

The announcement is a commitment of company shares, not a stated cash donation. The possible valuation of more than $1 trillion remains a prospective listing figure, rather than an achieved public-market valuation.

Last week, Anthropic told prospective investors that revenue rose 45% to $16.8 billion in the three months ending in September. The reported figure does not specify the comparison period for that increase.

Like other major AI developers, Anthropic is seeking to demonstrate that its business can produce substantial profits while spending billions on technology development and the infrastructure needed to run its models. Revenue growth alone does not establish profitability.

Employment and safety concerns frame the proposal

The proposed employment-related support comes as companies, particularly in technology, have announced thousands of job cuts after investing in AI, with many citing efficiency gains from adopting it.

Research published by the International Monetary Fund in 2024 suggested that AI could affect almost 40% of jobs worldwide and as many as 60% in advanced economies. Those estimates concern exposure to AI, not a forecast that an equivalent share of jobs will disappear.

Safety concerns also surround the planned listing. Anthropic reportedly warned in its IPO filing that AI could present catastrophic or existential dangers to humanity. That disclosure describes a potential risk, not an established prediction of what will happen.

Elon Musk responded to the fund announcement by advocating direct distribution of shares to the public. He separately said he would give one of his SpaceX shares to every child in America next year. That statement is a future pledge, not a completed distribution.
